This wrong name comes from its zoological name which is Lobodon carcinophagus. 
Carcinophagus means "animals feed crab". 
Their feed is krill (kind of shrimp) which is under the ice of the South Pole. 
This seal measures 2.2-2.6 m in length and weigh 200-300 kg.
